They thank Jimmy Stone of Stone Energy, David Guidry of Guico Machine Works, and Frank King and Will Roberds for insightful discussion and comments. Shocks are mostly of concern when the potential outcome is bad. The most infamous example of a negative economic shock occurred in the 1970s, when the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) imposed oil embargoes. Serious negative economic consequences resulted and proved especially problematic for policymakers because of their sudden, essentially unforeseen onset. Shocks do not, however, have to be negative. Indeed, this article suggests that at the moment the energy extraction industry is in the midst of a very positive shock caused by a combination of two new technologies. These technologies emerged very quickly, and while either technology by itself would have improved the drilling process, as discussed below, it is the combination of the innovations that has served to substantially reduce energy extraction costs in certain types of geological formations. The oil and gas industry has seen a series of dramatic technical developments in two distinct areas: three-dimensional imaging and directional (or horizontal) drilling. Combined, these two revolutionary techniques have significantly lowered the net extraction costs of oil and made feasible the reopening of wells and fields that had ended their economic usefulness under the old technology. The result has been a surge in the energy sector that is all the more significant because it is being pushed not by a spike in prices but rather by a drop in production costs and may therefore be lasting. So far this positive technology shock has most affected the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico. The new technologies are particularly advantageous for the kinds of fields characteristic of the gulf, and their early application there can yield information about what to expect as use of the technologies spreads. The impacts on extraction and exploration costs in other fields in the United States and abroad are likely to be significant. The purpose of this article is to examine these changes in the energy extraction industry, focusing on Louisiana for examples of the particular benefits in the Gulf of Mexico. This regional focus is appropriate for two

An Improved Model to Simulate Mud (Drilling Fluid) Dispersion through Porous Media

An improved model of mud dispersion has been introduced in this work. The advantages of this model consist of a new analytical correlation for dispersivity by using resistivity log data and using a new aspect of capacitance dispersion model. Mathematical formulations were expressed, solved by numerical model taking advantage of actual log and formation data. Achieved results yielded r...

Improved Rheological Model of Oil-Based Drilling Fluid for South-western Iranian Oilfields

In this study, predictive capabilities of apparent viscosity of oil-based drilling fluids which is used in National Iranian South Oilfields Company (NISOC) were evaluated using Newtonian and non-Newtonian models to drive a new suitable equation. The non-Newtonian models include Bingham plastic, Power law, Herschel-Bulkley, Casson, and Robertson-Stiff. To validate the results, the calculated vis...

A new method for Real-Time LWD data compression

Logging while drilling (LWD) is an advanced drilling technology in oil/gas exploration and development, which was developed to increase drilling efficiency and decrease drilling cost. The real-time logging data transmission by the limited transmission bandwidth is a key technology in LWD. Compressing logging data by some algorithm is an evident method to enhance data transmission. Managed Pressure Drilling Using Integrated Process Control

Control of wellbore pressure during drilling operations has always been important in the oil industry as this can prevent the possibility of well blowout. The present research employs a combination of automatic process control and statistical process control for the first time for the identification, monitoring, and control of both random and special causes in drilling operations. To this end, ...

Potential Evaluation and Optimization of Natural Biopolymers in Water-Based Drilling Mud

Drilling cost optimization has always been an important issue in the petroleum industry. In order to save costs and create new markets for local materials, Ofo (D. micocarpum) and food gum (C. populnea) powders were evaluated in this study at high temperature as alternative to imported chemical additives in water based drilling fluid. The base mud composed of alkali beneficiated local clay, ach...
